The Board of Education of the Bridgeport Public School District in Bridgeport, Connecticut is seeking a highly qualified visionary Superintendent to lead the District.  The Superintendent will serve as a student oriented and a transformational leader who will successfully address the concerns and issues communicated by the entire school community and residents throughout the school/community.  Bridgeport is located on the eastern region of Connecticut approximately 62 miles north of New York City on the Long Island Sound.  The city's public school system has 30 elementary schools, three interdistrict high schools, two alternative programs and an inter-district vocational aquaculture school. The system has about 19,000 students, making the Bridgeport Public Schools the largest school system in Connecticut. The school system employs a professional staff of more than 1,700.

McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development is engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the School Board in identifying and screening the candidates.

Location: Eastern Connecticut on the Long Island Sound 62 miles north of New York City

Salary:  Regionally competitive salary based upon experience and qualifications

The Qualifications

The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership to include high expectations, being data driven and maintaining a culture of accountability throughout the District. Experience as a Superintendent or in a central office leadership position in a similarly sized, diverse urban/suburban District is preferred.  Teaching experience as a classroom teacher in a public-school environment is required.  Doctorate and living in Bridgeport or the surrounding area are preferred.  Connecticut Superintendent certification – or eligibility for it – is required.  The Board is seeking a candidate with the following required characteristics: 

  1.  Successful experience, preferably as a superintendent, of an urban or suburban school district with demonstrated success in student achievement and empowerment, with particular attention on those that have been underserved. 

  2. While district residency is preferred, a pronounced commitment to visibility and access is required.

  3. Thorough knowledge of teaching and learning with evidence of strategic planning and bold visionary leadership in collaboration with the Board, all staff, parents, students, and community members.

  4. Experience in all aspects of school finance and ability to work creatively to optimize student resources.

  5. A passion for students and commitment to Bridgeport transcends any possible barriers.

  • School Board selects finalists to interview: May 2023

  • Finalists Interviews with the School Board: May 2023

  • Selection of new Superintendent: Early June 2023

  • Start date: Contract dependent
