Elmont School District - Elmont, New York

The ELMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT, located on the western south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York, adjacent to New York City, is seeking a Superintendent of Schools.

The 3,200 students in the Elmont School District are enrolled in six elementary schools.  The district places a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning and prides itself on the services it provides for all of its learners.  Students are religiously, linguistically, ethnically, and religiously diverse.  Stakeholders are committed to excellence, to a student-centered philosophy, and to enhancing an already successful school district and community. The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can build upon the district’s child-centered approach.

Among the many hallmarks of the Elmont School District recently cited by staff, parents, students, and members of the community were:

  • A district where the superintendent can get to know everyone and be involved

  • Staff and administrators are dedicated to ensuring a safe and productive learning environment

  • A board of education that works in the interest of its students

  • Everyone wants to do what’s good and right for kids

  • There is a strong sense of belonging throughout the community

Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent also cited by staff and residents are:

  • Addressing the growing needs of the ENL and special education populations

  • Implementing the approved construction bond issue with its impact on daily instruction

  • Filling major leadership position vacancies in Business, Transportation and Facilities

  • Continuing to develop community support for the schools

Following significant staff and community engagement, the Elmont Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new superintendent:

Preferably, the successful candidate will be:

  • An experienced classroom teacher, building principal, and, preferably, central office administrator, who is skilled in providing instructional and curriculum leadership

  • A successful leader with excellent listening, and oral and written communication skills, who is passionate about and familiar with working with diverse communities

  • A skilled administrator who remains visible in the schools and in the community

  • A capable decision maker who is guided by strong beliefs and able to delegate and support decision making by others

  • Experienced in providing a Board of Education with decision making guidance that supports what is best for all students and staff

The Board of Education is offering a regionally-competitive compensation package.  New York State certification as a School District Administrator or School District Leader is required for appointment.

Applications must be submitted online at www.leadschools.us by March 7, 2024 (click on “Current Searches”) and follow the link to Applitrack.  In addition to completing the basic application, candidates are asked to upload a cover letter describing how they meet the specification criteria listed above, as well as uploading a copy of their current résumé.   All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
