Elementary School Principal

Position Title:  Elementary School Principal

Job Classification: Administrator (Grade 5)

Qualifications:

  1. A valid Pennsylvania certificate (or letter of eligibility) for elementary school administrator.

  2. Extensive knowledge of K-5 teaching and learning best practices.

Reports to and Evaluated by:

The Elementary School Principal reports to and is evaluated by the Superintendent of Schools.

Supervises and Evaluates:

The Elementary School Principal supervises and evaluates directly (or provides input to the applicable direct supervisor of) all staff assigned to his/her building.

Principal Function:

The Elementary School Principal is responsible for the overall management, operation and leadership of the school in accordance with adopted school board policies, district-wide administrative regulations, and various building-level administrative procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*:

  1. Curriculum Development:  Work with the Assistant Superintendent, Director of Teaching and Learning and individual teachers to ensure that the curriculum meets district and state standards and is age-appropriate for students in the building.

  2. Instructional Leadership:  Keep current on current teaching and learning practices and procedures, and disseminate related information and resources to the instructional staff.

  3. Supervision of Instruction:  Provide leadership in the area of professional growth and employ both formative and summative evaluations for teachers.

  4. Student Scheduling:  Provide a schedule for students in core and special area classes which provides for maximum educational opportunities.

  5. School Budget:  Plan, coordinate and oversee all aspects of the school’s budget.

  6. Special Education:  Provide leadership within the building for students with special needs, to  include the appropriate placement and scheduling of students, securing resources for special education staff, and coordinating with central office personnel as applicable.

  7. Communications:  Establish two-way, open channels of communication with parents/guardians and staff members on all school-related matters.

  8. Staff Development:  Work closely with central office and building-level staff developers to provide a robust and meaningful professional development experience for the building’s instructional staff.

  9. Guidance Services:  Provide direction and support for guidance services within the building.

  10. Student Records:  Ensure that procedures and practices for registration of students are followed, in accordance with district policies, and establish guidelines for the proper maintenance and dissemination of student records.

  11. Student Progress Reporting:  Ensure that appropriate guidelines and activities are in place in order to share student progress with parents, including parent/teacher conferences in addition to report cards.

  12. Inventories:  Ensure practices and procedures are in place so that accurate inventories are kept of building supplies and materials.

  13. Recruitment and Selection of Staff:  Work with central office to ensure that the most qualified and best-fit staff members are selected for staffing vacancies.

  14. Safety:  Ensure practices and procedures are in place that ensure the health, safety, and welfare of employees and students.

  15. Central Office Coordination:  Keep central office apprised of problems, challenges and concerns that arise in the school.

  16. Learning Climate:  Provide a positive and supportive climate in the building where students feel welcome and safe.

  17. Parent Organizations:  Foster a productive partnership with members of the building’s parent organization(s).

  18. School Activities:  Plan, organize, attend (as reasonable) and direct the implementation of all school activities.

  19. Physical Plant:  Provide direction and support for proper use of school plant facilities and building use policies and procedures.

  20. Miscellaneous: perform any other duties assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Physical Necessities and Work Environment:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking or moving throughout the building, often for extended periods of the workday.  Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum), verbally communicate, and have vision requirements of near acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation and field vision. Performs a variety of duties, able to make judgments and work under high level of stress. Lifts/carries papers and/or other supplies weighing no more than 45 pounds.  Climbs stairs in and or around the building.  May occasionally bend and reach to secure records/files from desk, shelves, and filing cabinets.  Requires use of either hand for simple grasping, fine manipulation, and push/pull functions.  Subject to inside environmental conditions.
