The Center for Educational Leadership (CEL) is a nationally recognized center committed to the belief that all students can create limitless futures for themselves if schools foster conditions for them to experience happiness and pride. We help leaders create schools where students furthest from educational justice thrive. We do this by working side-by-side with school and district leaders across the country to improve leadership practice, ultimately creating transformed, equity-driven schools.

  • Central office redesign focused on supporting principals and teachers.
  • Equity-driven instructional leadership development for principals and their leadership teams.
  • Development of conditions and practices for impactful instructional coaching.

CEL is a self-sustaining center within the University of Washington College of Education. Our office is located in Seattle, Washington, where the work of our team of 20 educators and staff members is guided by our values of:

Who We Are Looking For

CEL is looking for an experienced, equity-focused Project Director who believes that leadership, at both the school and district level, can make a difference in the learning and lives of all students. We are seeking a dynamic leader who shares our belief that leaders who improve their practice with a commitment to equity will lead to schools where all students thrive. This position will be joining CEL at an exciting time of strategic renewal and will play a key role in mapping out how we can best serve students furthest from educational justice in school systems across the country. The Project Director will provide professional development and consulting services in the field, leading and managing work with leaders across the country. 

Successful candidates for this position will bring a deep commitment to equity, knowledge of the science of both pedagogy and adult learning and development, and a strong understanding of learner-centered, equity-focused leadership development. This position also requires an entrepreneurial mindset to help develop new impactful, revenue-generating opportunities within existing partnerships and to bring new partnerships to CEL.  As this position requires a high level of collaboration, candidates who are able to listen, learn from mistakes, and learn alongside others will have the greatest chance of success. Lastly, this position is ideal for someone who thrives in a variety of contexts, from working in a variety of school environments to working with national thought leaders.

This position requires up to 60% travel. While we prefer residency near our Seattle office, candidates who can successfully work remotely are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a full-time,12-month appointment at the non-tenure rank of Educator III, with possible annual reappointments dependent upon available funding and satisfactory performance in the role.

Please note that CEL is hiring for two positions. The Project Director position is primarily a field role with the opportunity to collaborate on internal projects. The Director position differs from the Project Director in terms of degree of leadership responsibility for service leadership, partnership development, and leading internal work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute a wide range of equity-driven professional learning and consultation engagements focused on supporting school and district leaders using CEL’s tools and materials. This will include facilitating learning with large and small groups, providing one-on-one coaching, leading classroom walkthroughs, and guiding networks of school leaders. Facilitating adult learning in person and virtually is critical to the success of this position.
  • Communicate with and manage relationships with new and existing school district partners.
  • Lead and contribute to workgroups and internal team learning processes utilizing strong facilitation and project management skills.
  • Advance CEL’s role as a national thought leader by writing articles and blog posts, using social media, presenting at conferences, and participating in professional associations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in teaching and learning, educational leadership, or equivalent education and experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years working in K-12 education, including traditional public, charter, and/or private school systems.
  • Experience as a principal, principal supervisor, or central office leader or as a leader in an educational organization.
  • Demonstrated experience leading equity-focused professional learning and conversations with diverse audiences and teams.
  • Demonstrated success and comfort in using a variety of delivery methods and strategies in engaging adults as learners.
  • Extensive knowledge of high-quality instruction and learning environments, including how leaders foster each.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility.
  • Able and willing to travel frequently and extensively.

Desired Qualifications

  • Doctorate in teaching and learning or educational leadership.
  • Experience as a leader in multiple K-12 settings with some urban school district experience.
  • Experience as a coach, trainer, or consultant providing professional development using multiple delivery methods in the K-12 environment.
  • Knowledge of and curiosity about current research and marketplace in K-12 education.
  • Experience with design thinking, improvement science, or other approaches to problem-solving and change.
  • Experience and comfort with the complexities of growing and maintaining fee-for-service clients.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to help develop new impactful, revenue-generating opportunities within existing partnerships and to bring new partnerships to CEL.
