POSITION:                Principal, Dr. Michael D. Fox Elementary School

REPORTS TO:          Superintendent of Schools/Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Leadership


The Hartford Public Schools is seeking a collaborative, dynamic, motivated, and inclusive school leader as Principal of Dr. Michael D. Fox Elementary School. Candidates with a strong elementary and middle grades background and a firm understanding of the range of academic, social, and emotional needs of students within these grades are invited to apply. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate a commitment to effective leadership and parent and community involvement.

M.D. Fox School is a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 school located in a newly renovated building in Hartford’s South End.  At Dr. M.D. Fox the focus is on developing the whole child.  Students are challenged academically, nurtured emotionally, and practice social skills daily.  A career-focused curriculum prepares students holistically to enter high school.

  • Strong community partnerships with the Village for Families and Children, ConnectiKids, Hartford Performs, Trinity College, and Kingswood-Oxford School

Connecticut Certification in Intermediate Administration (092)


  • Extensive instructional experience at the elementary and middle school levels in urban/multi-cultural settings
  • Knowledge of and experience with the needs and challenges of neighborhood schools
  • Strong and collaborative leadership with an honest, transparent, and inclusive style that supports high student outcomes and educational excellence
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective use of technology in instruction, management, and communication 
  • Unyielding commitment to students, self, and school's constant learning and development 
  • Record of success leading adults (as a grade-level/dept. chair, coach, or administrator)
  • Knowledge of pedagogy for development of curriculum and assessment that supports student learning
  • Persistent use of data and researched-based focus on student achievement
  • Knowledge of all federal and state mandates and regulations (IDEA, 504, Title IX, SRBI, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in building partnerships and resources for a school, and a willingness to work with various community partners
  • Demonstrated skill in staff recruitment, development, supervision, and evaluation
  • Outstanding and visible communication skills with the ability to welcome interaction with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families) and community at large to advance the school’s mission and vision
  • Ability to inspire excellence in others 
  • A commitment to the achievement of all students
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Experience fundraising and grant writing, preferred
  • Demonstrated experience building a positive school climate
  • Bilingual (Spanish), preferred

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary in accordance with Hartford Principals’ and Supervisors’ Association contract.  Under the current 2015-2016 Schedule, the salary range is $119,262 - $135,765.  Twelve-month position.
