Executive Director of Professional Field Services - Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy - Aurora- IL

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® invites you to join in shaping and implementing the next generation of innovative and engaging learning experiences.  IMSA is actively seeking a diverse pool of applicants for the full-time leadership position of Executive Director of Professional Field Services which reports to President José M. Torres, PhD.  This individual is directly responsible for building the capacity of educational and community institutions throughout Illinois to transform STEM teaching and learning using the lessons learned and rooted in IMSA’s learning laboratory.  

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. (www.imsa.edu)

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The Executive Director of Professional Field Services will:

  • Work closely with the Academy’s administration and faculty to inform the design, development, and implementation of field services, professional development, and student programs
  • Develop and implement IMSA services through the continuation of current program offerings (e.g., Fusion and PBL) and the creation of new initiatives that support STEM and entrepreneurial and social entrepreneurial education
  • Create a strategic presence for student programs (Fusion, Summer@IMSA, Allies, etc.) that increases STEM access interest, fluency, proficiency, and persistence
  • Support the recruitment of underrepresented populations throughout Illinois into IMSA’s residential program
  • Support schools, districts,  and communities in Illinois by building their capacity to provide powerful teaching and learning opportunities in STEM education
  • Explore and recommend options to support transformation of STEM education in Chicago, other urban centers and downstate Illinois
  • Work with school districts, regional superintendents, consortia and other state providers to develop products and services that support their transforming STEM education
  • Redesign existing IMSA student and teacher outreach programs to ensure financial sustainability
  • Determine and secure revenue sources to create self-sustaining resources and programs
  • Oversee operations of educator development programs on and off campus
  • Develop relationships with potential partners to expand support for teachers and leaders in Illinois and beyond
  • Lead the strategic continuation and expansion of educator and student programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience:

The required skills and experience for this position include:

  • Proven ability to move projects from design phase to implementation
  • Knowledge of IMSA's four competencies: competency-driven, inquiry-based, problem-centered, and integrative
  • Deep experience and knowledge of state, national and international science and mathematics education standards and how they are evolving
  • Knowledge and awareness of educational research and new trends in STEM and gifted education
  • Proven leadership experience in strategic planning, technology-facilitated learning, production methods, marketing and coordination of people and resources
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, equity, and excellence in student and professional development programs
  • Extensive knowledge of adult education in relation to the trends and research associated with the implementation and delivery of teacher professional development
  • Experience in the creation and delivery of STEM curriculum as well as teacher/educator professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals and diverse populations
  • Excellent information/computer skills including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation and online learning
  • Demonstrated organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, understanding, and respectfulness of all individuals, including those from diverse backgrounds
  • A minimum of a Master's degree in a STEM related field and/or instructional systems design
  • Seven to ten years of direct experience coordinating educational programs
  • Bilingual English-Spanish preferred
  • PhD or terminal degree preferred in a STEM related field and/or instructional systems design

Salary and Benefits:

The position of Executive Director of Professional Field Services is a full-time employment-at-will position.  Salary and benefits are commensurate with training and experience expected at this level of employment.  As part of the State University Retirement System, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits.  The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement System of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
