Outstanding Opportunity

     Superintendent for Newark Public Schools

Newark Public Schools is seeking an outstanding, visionary Superintendent to lead the District at this historic time. After 23 years of state intervention, the District and its nearly 36,000 students in 64 schools are transitioning to local control. At the same time local progress on learning outcomes and graduation rates in recent years show that that Newark is truly a district on the rise. As one of the oldest school systems in New Jersey with a long and proud history, the District is looking for a leader to build on that history while taking Newark Public Schools and its diverse learners into the next empowered and impressive phase of its story.

Newark is also a city on the rise. With a population of approximately 282,000 living in five wards renowned for their business and cultural diversity, Newark is the third-oldest city in the US. The city is also the hub for higher education with Rutgers-Newark, NJIT and several other major universities in and around the city. With cultural institutions, community-based organizations, and a Mayor who was a former teacher and principal, the city is full of partners who stand at the ready to support and partner with its schools.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A keen focus on students first, with a clear vision on how to improve learning and outcomes for diverse learners
  • Significant experience in communicating effectively with all constituencies, with a particular ability to work collaboratively with the Board of Education
  • Success as a change agent that can address system-level issues with a problem-solving mentality
  • Ability to recruit and retain high-quality staff who will be able to execute a student-focused vision for success.

Interested Candidates should hold or be eligible for the New Jersey School Administrator endorsement (6A:9B-12.4 School administrator).
