Dr. Pedro Galaviz,
Superintendent of Schools
Canutillo Independent School District
Career Highlights & Education:There isn't just one highlight, but a series of highlights that stand out for me. That is the efforts of the various teams I've worked with to promote the foundations of literacy by empowering teachers and principals and applying the principles of research. As a Latino American, my career has focused on kids in which the odds are stacked against them within a system that typically perpetuates the status quo. Breaking through those institutional barriers has been and continues to be my greatest joy.
What I like best about my job: My favorite part of the week is walking down the halls with elementary, middle and high school students at our various campuses. They energize me while at the same time ground me as to the reason why we as district employees show up to work each day. Their innocence and passion for learning help me overcome the challenges of the job.
The best advice I’ve ever received is: Stay balanced. Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Realize that the public school industry is a people business and that your title does not entitle you to respect among your peers – you have to earn it each day.
Advice you would give a new superintendent or school system leader: Stay balanced. God – family – work. Every beginning comes from some other beginning's end.
If I ever snuck out of work early, I could probably be found: I'd probably be found either at church or at a baseball game such as our new AAA Minor League team, the El Paso Chihuahuas.
People would be surprised to know that: I was 6' 5" tall before I became a Superintendent and now I'm 5' 6" tall.
One thing I wish more people knew about ALAS is: ALAS is about making connections and building enduring, mutually beneficial relationships. Allowed me to connect with new people, cultivate emerging relationships and leverage my professional and personal life for the sake of promoting an optimal learning environment for all stakeholders.
