The Hempstead Union Free School District is seeking an experienced, dynamic educational leader. Prospective applicants should have broad-based experience in: serving a culturally diverse urban/suburban environment; addressing critical educational and socio-environmental issues; addressing increased achievement for all students; and reducing achievement gaps through exemplary curriculum development. New York State Certification or eligibility for certification is required. The Hempstead Union Free School District serves 7,629 students in one Pre-K School, one Pre-School, six Elementary Schools (grades 1-5), one Middle School (grades 6-8), and one High School (grades 9-12).


Hempstead is an energetic community with a variety of retail stores, boutiques, restaurants, and professional services.  Hempstead residents have easy access to New York City linking them with the arts, entertainment, and a variety of cultural venues. Hempstead  is home for residents from uniquely diverse backgrounds, Hofstra University, several museums, the Neighborhood Summer Concert Series and over 1400 acres of green space.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Clearly articulate the Mission, Vision, and Goals of the district
  • Engage the community by building relationships with various constituencies.
  • Lead with a visible presence that clearly communicates forward movement for all students, the district and community.
  • Discuss and build consensus with the Board on issues critical to the district.
  • Design a sound and balanced school budget that reflects the academic, social, emotional, and socio-economic needs of all students and the district as a whole.
  • Maintain a highly qualified/experienced staff, and whenever possible look to promote from within.
  • Create a climate of mutual respect by encouraging collaboration between all stakeholders.
  • Evaluate initiatives and their relationship to professional development.
