Valeria Silva,
ALAS Board Member,

Saint Paul Public Schools
Saint Paul, MN

Career Highlights & Education:I am nearing my 28th year in Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) and have been its superintendent for six years. My career in SPPS has been as a teacher, program/curriculum coordinator, assistant principal, principal, director of English Language Learners, and chief academic officer. My education has included traditional colleges and universities from Chile and Minnesota, ongoing on-the-job practices, international delegations to China, Thailand, Cuba, Chile, Panama, Greece and Turkey, and rigorous training in the Broad Academy. All these experiences have made invaluable contributions to my learning and fierce fight for educational equity.

What I like best about my jobI enjoy connecting and building relationships with staff, students, families, and the community.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:  Take time to make informed decisions.

Advice you would give a new superintendent or school system leader: Listen to your stakeholders; be flexible and willing to change decisions if needed.

If I ever snuck out of work early, I could probably be found: Enjoying the sunny outside weather.

People would be surprised to know that:  I love to garden and a favorite hobby of mine is tiling floors and walls.

One thing I wish more people knew about ALAS is:  ALAS enhanced my personal and professional growth and is a network that develops Latino leaders.
