March 2014 Member Spotlight - Susana Cordova

Susana Cordova,
Chief Academic Officer,
Denver Public Schools

Career Highlights & Education:  I have a BA in English, endorsed in ESL and English; MA in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership.

What I like best about my job is:  I love working with educators who understand that what they do changes kids’ lives. As a first generation college graduate, I know that I couldn’t be where I am without the “village” I found in my schools and I love working in a school district where we embrace this responsibility.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:  “Praise the bridge that carried you over.” In other words, remember the people who gave you opportunities and be the bridge to the future for others.

Advice you would give a new superintendent or school system leader:  Be true to yourself in all that you do—your values matter and make you the best leader you can be.

If I ever snuck out of work early, I could probably be found:  Picking up my kids to sneak in a Netflix marathon while building Lego castles.

People would be surprised to know that:  Not only have I worked my entire professional career in the Denver Public Schools, but I am also a DPS grad, as are my parents and (soon to be)—both my kids.

One thing I wish more people knew about ALAS is:  ALAS is an incredible organization to connect with people who are working on the same issues, who share a similar history but also have unique perspectives on how to ensure educational opportunities of high quality for all students. Plus, our conferences are a blast!
