Juan Cabrera,
Superintendent
El Paso Independent School District
El Paso, TX

Career Highlights & Education:I am a native Texan and Spanish speaker and come from a long line of educators. I graduated from Texas A & I University in 1988 with a Bachelors of Business Administration and obtained my law degree from the University Of Texas School of Law in 1996. I also completed programs at the London School of Business and the Harvard Negotiation Project. Additionally, I participated in the first ALAS Superintendents Leadership Academy, which seeks to prepare experienced leaders to successfully run urban public education systems especially in minority serving school systems.

I serve on the state boards of the Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, Minority Males Consortium and the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium. I am also on the Executive Committee of the Council of the Great City Schools.

What I like best about my jobWorking with individuals who are passionate abut making a difference in the lives of others. I have worked in the private sector and greatly enjoyed the fast pace and challenge, but ultimately, I chose to return to a school system where I could share my passion for improving lives and creating opportunities with like-minded colleagues.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:  Find your passion and your job will not feel like work!

Advice you would give a new superintendent or school system leader:  Take your time in your transition to understand your community and its culture because no two are alike.

If I ever snuck out of work early, I could probably be found: Reading or golfing or anything that takes my mind off work.

People would be surprised to know that:  I lived in Europe for 5 years working as an international software attorney.

One thing I wish more people knew about ALAS is:  It is an amazing networking organization. I have met many of my professional friends and colleagues through ALAS.
