April 2014 Member Spotlight - Eduardo B. Soto

Eduardo B. Soto,
Associate Superintendent for Secondary Education,
Albuquerque Public Schools

Career Highlights & Education:  BA in Bilingual Education/Social Studies from the University of New Mexico; MA in Special Education from the University of New Mexico; Education Specialist in Administration from the University of New Mexico

What I like best about my job is:  Furthering the goals of our district which focus on closing the achievement gap, improving graduation rates and improving college and career opportunities for all students.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:  No act of kindness ever goes unnoticed.

Advice you would give a new superintendent or school system leader:  Never lose sight of your primary mission and focus—to lead and serve our students, schools, district and community.

If I ever snuck out of work early, I could probably be found:  In a used book store thumbing through old books or walking down by the Rio Grande River at a nice and slow meditative pace just enjoying the quiet time.

People would be surprised to know that:  I actually enjoy singing and have a pretty good singing voice, and that I also go on silent retreats a couple of times a year to a monastery in northern New Mexico.

One thing I wish more people knew about ALAS is:  ALAS is an organization that promotes Latino leaders and their professional growth across our country. With ALAS, our best days are ahead of us. іArriba y adelante!
